C4UTI

Urinary Tract Infections

The C4UTI is a rapid test that can diagnose urinary tract infections with a sensitivity and reliability comparable to the gold standard, delivering the result to the health care professionals within the day.

What are urinary tract infections (UTI) ?

Urinary tract infections (UTI) is a widespread disease worldwide (1). In France, UTI is the second most frequent reason for consultation and prescription of antimicrobial drugs in medical practices and emergency rooms. The cytobacteriological examination of urine (CBEU) is the most prescribed test in a microbiology laboratory.

Escherichia coli is the main germ responsible for UTI (70-80%), but in some cases UTI can be caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus

What is the standard of care today?

Most of UTI diagnostic tests are performed in medical labs. The “gold standard” for diagnosis is currently bacterial culture coupled to mass spectrometry identification. The bacteria’s growth is time consuming and slows down the whole process which can take up to 48 hours before handing out the diagnostic results to the physician.

While waiting for the results, as a precautionary measure patients often receive broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs, although on average up to 80% of the tests will come back negative. This overuse of antimicrobial drugs leads to antimicrobial resistance which is a major and global health problem nowadays.

What are the main features of C4UTI diagnostic test ?

C4UTI is based on the detection and counting of microcolonies. It will be fully automated and compatible with mass spectrometry identification of micro-organisms.

This innovative UTI diagnostic test enables :

  • results within 6 hours
  • reduction of “reflex” antimicrobial drugs

The current manual version of the test enables a diagnosis within 8 hours. The automated version with an optimized protocol will enable to release the UTI test results within 6 hours maximum.
